WSF-Participants Decide on Counter-Summit to WSIS

At the third World Social Forum in Porto Allegre (Barzil), the WSIS was one of the topics debated. Members of the Communications-Rights campaign CRIS organized meetings and workshops to discuss civil society strategies for the WSIS negotiations and campaigns on issues of the information society.
The participants of a meeting on possible actions outside the official summit agreed on preparing a counter or protest summit, or a forum for social movements on information and communication. At the heart of the forum as well as of other campaigns debated at the WSF will be the human right to communicate. After the interest in information and media themes had alraedy been notably high at the European Social Forum in Florence in November 2002, in Porto Alegre the theme area "media, culture, counter hegemony" was agreed upon as one of five major themes. It will now be one center of gravity for the globalization critical movement.
