WSIS debates at EYFA meeting |
|
| |
Oviedo (Spain), April 2003. At the annual meeting of the European youth network EYFA, the WSIS was an issue of interesting debate. EYFA gives young people the opportunity to work in civil society organisations in other countries. A number of EYFA members are working in alternative media projects and were particularly interested in counter- and side-events around the summit. The EYFA meeting is just the latest example of increasing interest in the WSIS by civil society organisations and networks.
The week-long meeting took place in the mountains of Asturias (Northern Spain) and served as a platform for around 100 youth activists to exchange ideas and experiences particularly around issues of communication. A workshop on the WSIS was well-attended and brought together Indymedia activists, members of alternative media and communication NGOs as well as many interested people from all over Europe. For many, it was the first time to hear about the WSIS, but some started immediately planning their own activities for the summit.
There was particular interest in creating concrete practical projects of information and communication outside the summit, such as web-TV and web-radio transmissions. Many participants were quite sceptical about participating directly in the summit, for example as part of the civil society coordination. They preferred to create alternative projects, rather than participate in existing global structures, such as a world summit.
