Civil Society proposals for participation |

Berlin, 3 June 2003. During a meeting on 25 May, the German WSIS Civil Society Coordinating Group nominated six people for participating in the German government delegation during the preparation process for the first phase of the WSIS. The Group also demanded that civil society participants shall be involved in delegation procedures during the whole WSIS process up until the second summit in 2005.
The group of six nominees comprises leading members of the Social Science Research Centre Berlin, the Free Software Foundation Europe, Terre des Femmes, the German UNESCO Commission, the services union ver.di, and the Research Group Information Society and Security (FOGIS). The nominees will advise the government delegation on issues related to the information society, bring genuine civil society themes and issues into the work of the delegation, participate in debates and decision-making in the international WSIS process and influence the latter according to civil society positions.
The nomination adds the direct involvement in decision-making processes as a new aspect to the work of civil society groups in the WSIS process, which has so far included mostly networking and lobbying. It is based on the outcomes of a meeting with government delegates in April. At that meeting, the government had agreed to a participation of civil society actors in the government delegation during the upcoming PrepCom3 conference. The Civil Society Coordinating Group hopes that the fruitful dialogue between government delegates and societal groups will continue.
